LAS VEGAS, Nevada — A record number of IMCA Modified pre-entries have been received for this weekend’s Duel in the Desert at the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The event already is the biggest IMCA Modified race in the Western U.S. and its growth shows no signs of slowing down. Pre-entries for the 11th annual Duel in the Desert today reached an all-time high of 180 cars and LVMS officials are projecting the total car count to exceed 220 this weekend. "Last year, 139 cars were pre-registered for the event and an additional 39 cars entered at the pit gate for a record 178 entries when we began heat races on Thursday evening," said Chris Blair, LVMS’ vice president of racing operations. “This year we've already broken our record and IMCA officials are predicting we may reach 230 or even 240 IMCA Modified entries." On Wednesday, track crews began moving fence lines at the dirt track to allow teams to utilize a portion of the drag strip pit area. The record car count may also require some adjustments to Thursday's race format. "IMCA officials are considering an adjustment to the race format and the fans may enjoy a bonus on Thursday,” Blair added. “We may have to run more than the advertised 16 heat races on Thursday night. Last year we had 16 heat races of approximately 11 cars each trying to earn a position in Thursday's qualifying feature. Once we see how many cars go through tech inspection on Thursday morning we will probably add a few heat races and will begin looking at our options for the total number of cars that will take the green flag in Saturday night's 40-lap, $5,000-to-win A-Feature." This year’s Duel in the Desert has attracted drivers from 18 states and three Canadian provinces. It appears that Terry Taylor will make the farthest tow, coming 2,098 miles from his home in Hurricane, West Virginia. In addition to the IMCA Modifieds, several other classes will run support races on Friday and Saturday evening. IMCA Stock Cars, INEX Legends and LVMS Bombers will all be showcased with special event purses. Included on this weekend’s race card are IMCA Stock Cars, Bombers and Legends Cars. Adult admission for Saturday night is $18. For more information, please call or e-mail the dirt track’s office at (702) 632-8213 or mhaynes@lvms.com.
